Abhishek Bachchan Wins Filmfare, Faces Criticism Online
Mumbai — After more than two decades in the film industry, Abhishek Bachchan has finally secured his first Filmfare Best Actor Award, winning for his performance in I Want to Talk (2024). The film, directed by Shoojit Sircar, features Bachchan as a man battling cancer while navigating fractured relationships and unspoken emotions.
The recognition, however, quickly became the subject of controversy. A journalist on social media alleged that the award was the result of “relationships and money,” claiming that “no one has even seen this film.” The post triggered a wave of debate online, with some questioning the credibility of Bollywood’s award culture.
Bachchan, who is active on social media, responded firmly:
“I did not buy any award. My success is the result of 25 years of hard work, sweat and tears.” He urged journalists to act responsibly before making damaging claims, stressing that labeling such accusations as “opinion” does not absolve them of accountability. “Accusing someone of buying awards is not an opinion, it is a baseless allegation,” he added.
At the award ceremony, Bachchan appeared visibly emotional. With trembling hands, he admitted that he had rehearsed his acceptance speech countless times in front of a mirror. “Today this dream has become a reality in front of me,” he said, thanking his parents Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan, his wife Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and daughter Aaradhya for their unwavering support.
In I Want to Talk, Bachchan’s character communicates more through silence and expression than dialogue, portraying a man whose inner turmoil is reflected in his eyes rather than words. Critics noted that the role showcased a depth and restraint rarely seen in his earlier work.
Reflecting on his career, Bachchan acknowledged past failures and revealed that he once considered quitting acting. It was his father, Amitabh Bachchan, who encouraged him to persevere.
“I start every day with a new aspiration, both that day and today,” Abhishek said in a recent interview.
Despite the controversy, the award marks a milestone in Bachchan’s career, symbolizing persistence through setbacks and a renewed recognition of his craft.
