Deadly Clashes Erupt in Aleppo: 12 Killed and Thousands of Civilians Displaced

  • 12 people confirmed dead in recent violence.
  • Thousands of residents fled Kurdish-majority areas.
  • Civilians describe situation as ‘unbearable’ horror.

The northwestern Syrian city of Aleppo, long scarred by years of civil conflict, has once again been plunged into brutal chaos following severe two-day clashes between Syrian government forces and elements identified as Kurdish fighters. These intense battles have claimed the lives of at least 12 individuals and triggered a massive humanitarian crisis as thousands of residents flee for safety. The epicenter of the recent violence has been the Kurdish-majority districts of Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh.

According to reports compiled by BBC Urdu and Reuters, the displacement is vast. Thousands of citizens have been forced to abandon their homes, seeking temporary refuge in other cities or makeshift shelters, such as mosques converted into holding centers. One displaced resident, Samer Issa, spoke to Reuters, describing the decision to leave as agonizing. Issa, now sheltering with young children, stated that the shelling had become overwhelming, and the children could no longer endure the constant blasts and explosions, calling the situation “heartbreaking”. The overall sentiment among residents is one of profound dread.

A resident of Aleppo, speaking to the BBC on Wednesday, described the circumstances as “extremely terrifying and unbearable.” They noted that all their friends had relocated, lamenting the unpredictable nature of the conflict: “Sometimes there is peace, and suddenly the war begins again.”

The Syrian government, in response to the operations, maintained that its actions were solely aimed at establishing ‘security’ in the areas and were a necessary response to alleged attacks by armed groups within those districts. However, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) coalition, which is heavily Kurdish-led, has strongly refuted the government’s justification. While the SDF officially claims it holds no military presence in Aleppo city, it condemned the government action as a ‘criminal attempt’ designed purely to forcibly evict and displace the civilian population from their ancestral homes, further complicating the already volatile security landscape in Syria.
