China to Send Pakistani Astronauts on Space Station Mission

Beijing/Islamabad — In a groundbreaking development for Pakistan’s space ambitions, China has confirmed that Pakistani astronauts will participate in a short-duration mission aboard its Tiangong Space Station. The announcement was made by a spokesperson for the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) at a press conference, and reported by state news agency Xinhua.

According to CMSA, Pakistani astronauts will undergo training alongside Chinese taikonauts, preparing to take part in scientific experiments, operational activities, and routine crew duties during the mission. The Global Times reported that the selection process for Pakistani candidates is already underway, with one astronaut expected to join a mission at an appropriate time.

This milestone follows a cooperation agreement signed in March 2025 between Pakistan’s Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) and CMSA. The agreement paved the way for Pakistan’s first manned space mission, symbolizing a deepening of Sino-Pak cooperation in advanced technology and space exploration.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed the announcement, calling it a valuable initiative that would strengthen bilateral ties and accelerate Pakistan’s progress in space science. He emphasized that the collaboration reflects the trust and strategic partnership between the two countries.

The news comes shortly after Pakistan achieved another breakthrough in its space program. On October 19, 2025, SUPARCO successfully launched its first hyperspectral satellite (HS-1) from a Chinese launch center. The HS-1 satellite, equipped with advanced hyperspectral imaging technology, will analyze fine color bands of the Earth and atmosphere, supporting environmental monitoring, agricultural planning, and scientific research.

Experts say the astronaut mission will not only mark Pakistan’s entry into human spaceflight but also enhance its capacity for scientific innovation and international collaboration. For China, the move underscores its growing role as a leader in global space exploration and its willingness to share opportunities with partner nations.

With astronaut training underway and the HS-1 satellite already in orbit, Pakistan’s space program is entering a new era of capability and visibility on the world stage.
