Federal Government Bars PTI Leaders from Traveling Abroad

Decision by Federal Government

Islamabad: The federal government has decided to impose a ban on the foreign travel of senior Pakistan TehreekeInsaf (PTI) leaders in connection with the May 9 cases. According to Express News, the move was finalized after consultations and recommendations from relevant authorities, with approval granted to place the names of key political figures on the Exit Control List (ECL).

Names Placed on ECL

Sources confirmed that the list includes PTI founder Imran Khan and several senior leaders such as Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Omar Ayub, Fawad Chaudhry, Shibli Faraz, Ali Amin Gandapur, Shehryar Afridi, Usman Dar, Shireen Mazari, Zartaj Gul, Musarrat Cheema, and Kanwal Shauzab. In addition, Sheikh Rashid, Sheikh Rasheed Shafiq, and Major (R) Tahir Sadiq have also been barred from traveling abroad. The restrictions extend further to figures like Raja Basharat and Waseeq Qayyum Abbasi, along with other personalities linked to the party.

Role of Punjab Home Department

Officials revealed that the Punjab Home Department had prepared and forwarded a detailed list of names to the federal government. These recommendations were based on investigations and developments following the May 9 unrest. The ECL Committee reviewed the proposals and subsequently sent them to the federal cabinet for approval, which was granted.

Context of May 9 Cases

The restrictions are part of the government’s broader response to the violent incidents of May 9, which led to widespread arrests, FIRs, and ongoing trials against PTI workers and leaders. Authorities argue that preventing foreign travel is necessary to ensure accountability and to keep those facing charges within the country’s jurisdiction.

Broader Implications

The decision underscores the continuing political and legal challenges facing PTI leadership. With several of its senior figures already imprisoned or facing trial, the addition of travel bans further limits the party’s ability to operate internationally. It also reflects the government’s determination to pursue accountability in connection with the May 9 unrest, while intensifying the political standoff between PTI and state institutions.
