FO Denies Claims of Pakistan’s CDF Asim Munir Planning US Visit
Weekly Briefing in Islamabad
Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andarabi has rejected media reports claiming that Chief of Defence Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir is set to visit the United States soon. Speaking at the weekly press briefing on Thursday, he said there is no official information available regarding such a trip or a possible meeting with US President Donald Trump.
Clarification on Reports
Responding to a question about Asim Munir’s alleged upcoming visit to Washington, the spokesperson said: “I have seen the reports, but I have no information to share with you.” He added that as far as the Chief of Army Staff or Chief of Defence Forces’ visit to the US is concerned, the Foreign Office currently has no details.
Reuters Report
It is worth noting that on Wednesday, international news agency Reuters reported that Asim Munir was expected to travel to Washington for talks with President Trump. The report, citing unnamed sources, suggested that discussions could include the possibility of sending Pakistani troops to a Gaza peacekeeping mission.
FO Response to Reuters Claim
When another journalist referred to the Reuters story, Tahir Andarabi clarified that he could only deny the impression created by the report that such a visit was already planned and finalized. “So, I am refuting that,” he said, stressing that no official confirmation exists.
Awaiting Official Announcement
The spokesperson reiterated that the Foreign Office has no information about any upcoming US visit by Asim Munir. He emphasized that in the event of such a trip, a formal announcement would be made by the Government of Pakistan.
Context of Leadership Visits
Tahir Andarabi explained that Pakistan’s political and military leadership regularly visits different capitals. However, he noted that whenever an official visit is scheduled, a proper announcement is issued beforehand, something that has not happened in this case.
