Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi Sentenced to 17 Years in Toshakhana II
Islamabad:
An Islamabad court has sentenced former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to 17 years in prison each in the Toshakhana II case. Special Judge Central Arjumand Shah announced the verdict inside Adiala Jail in the presence of both accused. According to the written judgment, the prosecution successfully proved its case and the two were found guilty.
Verdict and Sentences
Imran Khan was awarded 10 years under Section 409 of the Pakistan Penal Code and an additional 7 years under the Anti‑Corruption Act. Bushra Bibi received the same sentences, totaling 17 years. The court also imposed a fine of 16.4 million rupees per person, with an additional six months’ imprisonment in case of non‑payment.
The judgment noted that considering Imran Khan’s age and Bushra Bibi’s status as a woman, the court applied the minimum sentence permissible under law. Their time already spent in custody was also counted toward the punishment.
Background of the Case
On July 13, 2024, NAB arrested Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi in the Toshakhana II case at Adiala Jail. They remained in NAB custody for 37 days. After completing investigations, NAB filed a reference in the accountability court on August 20, 2024. Later, the case was transferred to the FIA under amended laws.
The case centered on a Bulgari jewelry set received during an official visit to Saudi Arabia in 2021. The set, gifted by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, included a bracelet, ring, earrings, and necklace. Prosecutors argued that the set was not deposited in the Toshakhana as required.
Investigations revealed that the couple had the set valued at 5.8 million rupees by a private firm and paid 2.9 million rupees, while official records from the Foreign Office and the Pakistani Embassy in Saudi Arabia confirmed the actual value exceeded 71.5 million rupees. Authorities stated this caused a loss of 32.85 million rupees to the national treasury.
FIA Anti‑Corruption Circle Statement
The FIA Anti‑Corruption Circle Islamabad said the Special Court Central‑I delivered the verdict after recording statements from 21 witnesses and hearing arguments from both sides. The court sentenced Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi to 10 years under Section 409 PPC and 7 years under Section 5(2) read with Section 47 of the Anti‑Corruption Act 1947. Each was fined 16.4 million rupees.
Following the verdict, FIA officials took both convicts into custody and transferred them to Adiala Jail to ensure compliance with court orders. Deputy Director Muhammad Afzal Khan Niazi and SHO Shams Gondal represented FIA in court.
The FIA emphasized that this was the first case in its history where a former Prime Minister and his spouse were convicted purely on documentary evidence. The agency reaffirmed its commitment to impartial accountability and praised the investigation team for successfully pursuing the case.
