Government to Move Imran Khan to Hospital for Eye Treatment
- Imran Khan to receive specialist eye treatment at medical facility.
- Supreme Court ordered medical checkup before February 16.
- Government denies any political deal behind the medical transfer.
The federal government of Pakistan has officially announced that former Prime Minister Imran Khan will be transferred to a specialized medical institution for an examination by expert ophthalmologists. This decision comes as part of the ongoing treatment for his eye condition and follows a specific directive from the Supreme Court of Pakistan. Federal Minister Atta Tarar stated that a detailed medical report regarding the findings and the treatment provided will be submitted to the apex court to ensure transparency and compliance with judicial orders.
Supreme Court Directive and Medical Concerns
The Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, issued a mandate for the government to facilitate a thorough medical checkup by specialists before February 16. This order was prompted by a report submitted by Salman Safdar, acting as a friend of the court, which highlighted the former premier’s complaints of deteriorating vision over the past three months. According to the report, Imran Khan expressed significant concern over his eyesight, noting that his vision was perfectly fine until October 2025 but has since required constant attention due to persistent tearing and blurred sight.
Clarification on Political Negotiations and Jail Conditions
Federal Minister Atta Tarar emphasized that the decision to provide specialized healthcare is a purely administrative and humanitarian measure and should not be misconstrued as a political deal or the result of negotiations. He clarified that while the government is committed to providing the best possible medical support, this does not indicate any shift in the legal or political stance against the PTI leadership. Tarar also mentioned that Imran Khan currently enjoys several facilities in jail, including access to a treadmill, which are not typically available to other prisoners, categorizing his environment as well-provided.
Future Medical Procedures and Logistics
While the specific hospital for the transfer has not yet been finalized, the government has assured that the move will take place soon to meet the court’s deadline. Professional medical practitioners are currently being consulted to ensure that the chosen facility can provide the necessary advanced equipment for eye surgery or specialized treatment if required. The government has urged the public and political stakeholders to avoid speculation and refrain from giving a political color to what is fundamentally a matter of prisoner health and judicial compliance.
