India’s Operation Sindoor Criticized in UN Experts’ Findings

Report Highlights Regional Tensions

The United Nations special experts have released a detailed report on the recent escalation between Pakistan and India, raising serious legal objections to India’s unilateral military actions in May 2025. The report condemns the Pahalgam attack and urges that those responsible be brought to justice under international law.

Pakistan’s Position

According to the findings, Pakistan categorically denied involvement in the Pahalgam incident and called for neutral, transparent, and internationally supervised investigations. The report underscores that Islamabad’s demand for impartial inquiry remains central to its diplomatic stance.

Operation Sindoor Declared Illegal

The experts noted that on 7 May 2025, India launched “Operation Sindoor” involving the use of force inside Pakistani territory. This action was deemed inconsistent with the UN Charter, particularly as India failed to notify the UN Security Council under Article 51, a violation of established global procedures.

Civilian Impact and Legal Violations

The report revealed that civilian areas were struck during the operations, with mosques damaged and multiple casualties reported. UN experts stressed that no automatic right of unilateral military action exists under international law in the name of counterterrorism.

Lack of Evidence Against Pakistan

The experts further stated that India did not provide credible evidence linking Pakistan at the state level to the Pahalgam attack. They warned that unlawful use of force constitutes a violation of the fundamental human right to life.

Risk of Escalation

Highlighting the dangers of unilateral military campaigns, the report cautioned that such steps could trigger a major regional conflict. If India’s actions are classified as anarmed attack,” international law would recognize Pakistan’s right to selfdefense.

Sovereignty and Global Principles

The experts concluded that India’s measures amounted to a grave breach of Pakistan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the principle of noninterference. Local media, including Express News, noted that the UN findings may intensify diplomatic debate over South Asia’s security architecture.
