Indonesia Seals $9B Deal for Chinese J‑10C Fighter Jets

Indonesia has officially decided to modernize its air fleet by purchasing 42 J‑10C fighter jets from China, a move that defense analysts say could reshape the regional balance of power.

According to Chinese media reports, Indonesian Defense Minister Sajjafri Syamsudin announced that the aircraft will soon be delivered, adding that “very soon these jets will be seen flying in the skies of Jakarta.” While he did not provide a specific delivery timeline, the announcement signals a major step in Indonesia’s defense modernization program.

On the financial side, Finance Minister Prabhai Udi Sadew confirmed that $9 billion has been approved for the procurement. Local outlets report that the Indonesian Air Force is currently conducting technical evaluations of the J‑10C series to ensure operational readiness.

The J‑10C, developed by Chengdu Aircraft Corporation, is classified as a 4.5‑generation multirole fighter jet. It comes equipped with an AESA radar system, PL‑15 long‑range missiles, and a high‑thrust engine, making it one of the most advanced platforms in its class.

Currently, only China and Pakistan operate the J‑10C. Pakistan inducted 36 of these jets in 2020, and they were notably deployed during the “Battle of Haq,” where the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) showcased their effectiveness against India. This performance reportedly influenced Indonesia’s decision to move forward with the purchase.

According to Express News that Jakarta’s acquisition of the J‑10C will not only strengthen its aerial defense but also highlight the growing influence of Chinese military technology in Asia. With Indonesia becoming the third operator of this aircraft, regional air power dynamics are expected to shift in the coming years.
