First Phase of Gaza Peace Plan Signed as Trump Declares ‘Historic Day’
US President Donald Trump declared on social media that Israel and Hamas have formally signed the first phase of a Gaza peace plan, describing it as a breakthrough that could pave the way for “a strong and lasting peace.”
According to Trump, the agreement includes the release of hostages and a partial withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. He praised the mediation efforts of Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey, calling the development “a great day for the Arab and Muslim world, Israel, neighboring countries, and the United States.”
Following the announcement, Hamas issued a statement confirming that an understanding had been reached to end the war. The group thanked the mediators and President Trump for their role but stressed that the international community must “ensure Israel fully implements all terms of the agreement.” Hamas emphasized that the people of Gaza had shown “unparalleled courage” and vowed to continue their struggle until full sovereignty and self-determination are achieved.
On the Israeli side, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the deal, describing it as “a great day for Israel.” In remarks cited by BBC Urdu, Netanyahu said, “With God’s help, we will bring all our people home.” He added that he would soon convene his cabinet to approve the agreement and thanked both the Israeli military and President Trump’s team for their “tireless efforts” in securing the release of hostages.
Meanwhile, scenes of celebration erupted across Gaza. Residents of Khan Younis were seen rejoicing after hearing the news. “Thank God, President Trump announced today that the war is over,” said Wael Rizwan, speaking to Reuters. Another resident, Abdul Majid Rabbo, expressed relief: “The bloodshed has ended. This is not just my happiness, it is the joy of Gaza, the Arab world, and all humanity.”
Despite the optimism, Hamas reiterated its demand that Trump and the mediating countries hold Israel accountable for implementing the deal in full. For Netanyahu, however, the agreement already marks a symbolic victory, one he described as a sacred mission to bring Israeli hostages home.
