“We Can’t Be Angels”: Asif’s Sharp Remarks on Judges
Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has leveled strong criticism at the judiciary, remarking that judges in Pakistan often behave like politicians and play a significant role in shaping the country’s history.
Speaking during a program on Hum News, Asif said he is trying to restrain himself from publicly revisiting the past actions of judges, including instances where they removed officials from office. He argued that while judges have been central to many turning points in Pakistan’s political trajectory, their conscience does not awaken when it comes to their own accountability.
Asif added that different standards appear to apply to politicians and judges, with stricter expectations placed on elected representatives. He sarcastically noted that judges seem to expect politicians to act like “angels,” which he said is unrealistic.
His remarks highlight ongoing tensions between the judiciary and political leadership, reflecting broader debates about accountability, power, and governance in Pakistan.
