Gen Z Leads Mexico City Protest: 100 Injured, 20 Arrested
Mexico City: A massive protest erupted in Mexico City’s historic Zócalo square on Saturday, as thousands of demonstrators gathered to denounce President Claudia Sheinbaum’s handling of violent crime. The rally, inspired by global Generation Z movements, quickly escalated into chaos, leaving more than 100 people injured and 20 arrested.
The demonstration included supporters of the “Sombrero Movement”, formed after the murder of Michoacán mayor Carlos Manzo, who was widely respected for his fight against organized crime. Protesters carried banners reading “We are all Carlos Manzo” and wore hats similar to those he was known for.
According to AFP, the protest began peacefully but turned violent when some participants tore down barriers protecting the presidential palace and hurled stones at police. Security forces responded with tear gas and fire extinguishers to disperse the crowd.
Mexico City security chief Pablo Vázquez confirmed that 20 protesters and 100 police officers were injured, with 40 requiring hospitalization. He added that arrests were made on charges of theft and violence, and an investigation has been opened into the reported assault of a journalist from La Jornada.
President Sheinbaum, who took office in October 2024, has enjoyed strong approval ratings above 70 percent, but her security policies have faced growing criticism following a series of high‑profile murders. Student activist Valentina Ramirez told AFP:
“This is one of the most corrupt governments ever, one that defends corrupt individuals rather than the people.”
The protest also carried global symbolism, with youth waving the pirate flag from the Japanese manga One Piece, which has become a rallying icon for young activists worldwide, from Madagascar to Peru.
