Multan on High Alert: PDMA Warns of Rising Flood Threat as Sutlej Surges

MULTAN — September 9, 2025 Punjab’s flood emergency intensified Tuesday as Irfan Kathia, Director General of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), warned that Multan is at “high risk” for the next 48 hours due to a new flood relay approaching from Head Trimmu. He made the statement during a joint press conference with Multan Commissioner Aamir Karim Khan.

According to BBC Urdu, the flood wave is expected to reach Head Muhammadwala via Trimmu Headworks, with water pressure rising dangerously close to critical levels. Authorities have closed roads leading to the Head Muhammadwala bridge and placed emergency teams on high alert.

Kathia confirmed that 63 people have died in flood-related incidents across Punjab. More than 4,300 villages in 26 districts have been affected, and over 74,000 displaced individuals are currently sheltering in tents. He added that Punjab is experiencing its tenth monsoon spell, with record-breaking rainfall in Lahore, Multan, and Faisalabad. Rain is expected to continue intermittently for the next 24 to 48 hours.

“319,000 cusecs of water is flowing in the Sutlej, while 120,000 cusecs is passing through Head Islam,” Kathia said. “Pressure will intensify on Head Muhammad Wala and Sher Shah flood dams within the next 24 hours.”

Commissioner Aamir Karim Khan stated that the decision to breach the Sher Shah embankment would be made by the district’s technical committee. In Jalalpur Pirwala, over 4,000 people were evacuated in a single day, though many victims have opted to stay with relatives rather than in flood relief camps.

Emergency operations are underway, supported by the Pakistan Army and Navy. Relief teams are distributing dry food and monitoring embankments across southern Punjab.
