NDMA Warns of Exceptionally High Flood Levels in River Sutlej – 48 Hours Critical

Islamabad, 25 August 2025 – The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an urgent warning of Exceptionally High Flood Levels in the River Sutlej at Ganda Singh Wala and downstream areas over the next 48 hours. The alert follows the development of a well-marked monsoon low over North Rajasthan, in combination with a westerly wave over Kashmir and adjoining regions, which has already triggered moderate rainfall in the upper catchments of the Sutlej River, both upstream and downstream of the Bhakra and Pong dams. The prevailing weather system, coupled with expected releases from Indian dams, is likely to cause a dangerous surge in water levels, posing a serious threat to nearby communities.

Authorities at federal, provincial, and district levels have been directed to identify vulnerable points, implement mitigation measures, and maintain enhanced monitoring to ensure rapid response. All civil agencies, including Rescue 1122, fire brigades, ambulance services, and civil defence units, have been placed on high alert with personnel and equipment ready for deployment. Evacuation of residents from low-lying and flood-prone areas has been advised, alongside the provision of shelter, food, and medical supplies in relief camps. Farmers and cattle herders have been urged to move livestock to safer locations, while vehicle movement in at-risk areas should be restricted. Measures to ensure backup power for water pumping stations, pre-placement of de-watering equipment, and prevention of electrocution hazards have also been emphasized.

The NDMA has urged the public, especially those living along the River Sutlej, River Indus, and associated nullahs, to remain vigilant, follow official instructions, and avoid unnecessary travel to flood-prone zones. Travelers and tourists have been cautioned about potential road hazards and may be diverted to safe waiting areas if conditions worsen. “All concerned authorities must take necessary measures to avoid any untoward situation during the forecast period,” stated Ali Imran Sayed, Director (Response) at NDMA. The next 48 hours are considered critical, and coordinated action between all relevant agencies is essential to safeguard lives and property.
