PM Shehbaz Sharif Approves Pakistan vs India Cricket Match
- Pakistan confirms it will play against India in the T20 World Cup 2026.
- PM Shehbaz Sharif approved the match after requests from Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
- The decision aims to promote global cricket and uphold sportsmanship.
Diplomatic Requests Lead to Strategic Decision
The decision was not made in isolation. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reportedly gave the green light after receiving formal requests from international partners. Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake held a telephonic conversation with the Prime Minister, urging Pakistan to participate in the match for the sake of the sport. During the call, the Sri Lankan leader reminded Pakistan of its unwavering support for Sri Lankan cricket during periods of security challenges in the past. Similarly, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) issued a press release calling on Pakistan to play the match on February 15 for the benefit of global cricket. The Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) also reached out to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to request a reconsideration of any boycott plans.
PCB and Government Coordination
The Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, Mohsin Naqvi, clarified that while the PCB manages the sport, decisions involving international relations and matches against India are handled at the government level. Speaking at an event in Lahore, Naqvi stated that Pakistan is not intimidated by any external pressure or threats. However, he emphasized that guests should always be treated with respect. Following a meeting with an ICC delegation, Naqvi met with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to finalize the strategy. This collaborative approach ensures that the decision reflects both the national interest and the spirit of sportsmanship.
Regional Support and Brotherhood
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President, Aminul Islam, praised Pakistan’s decision, describing it as a testament to the brotherly ties between the two nations. The BCB thanked Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and the Pakistani players for their professional attitude. This development is seen as a strengthening of cricket cooperation within Asia. By agreeing to play, Pakistan has positioned itself as a responsible member of the international cricket community, prioritizing the fans and the commercial viability of the T20 World Cup 2026. The match remains the most anticipated event of the tournament, expected to draw record-breaking viewership worldwide.
