ISLAMABAD, Aug 28 – Pakistan is set to launch local production of insulin following a strategic partnership with Russia’s Zavod Medsintez, marking a significant milestone in the country’s healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors.
As reported by the Associated Press of Pakistan, the initiative is part of the government’s broader effort to strengthen domestic manufacturing of essential medicines and attract foreign investment in health innovation. The agreement includes full technology transfer, enabling Pakistani firms to produce insulin at scale within three years.
Genetics Pharmaceuticals, based in Lahore, has received formal registration from the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) to import insulin from Russia, paving the way for bulk production and distribution. Officials say the move will reduce costs for patients and ensure consistent supply across public and private health facilities.
“This partnership reflects our commitment to affordable healthcare and scientific collaboration,” said Federal Health Minister Dr. Nadeem Jan. “It will not only benefit diabetic patients but also boost Pakistan’s pharmaceutical capabilities.”
The announcement comes amid growing demand for insulin and rising global prices. Pakistan currently imports most of its insulin, placing financial strain on both hospitals and patients. Local production is expected to ease this burden and support long-term health planning.
The Ministry of National Health Services has confirmed that the insulin project will be monitored under strict regulatory protocols, with support from international health bodies to ensure quality and safety.
In parallel, Pakistan continues to expand its vaccination programs, improve rural health access, and strengthen oversight of drug pricing and supply chains. The Senate Standing Committee on Health is currently reviewing market practices to prevent cartelization and ensure transparency in pharmaceutical pricing.
With this landmark agreement, Pakistan joins a growing list of countries investing in domestic insulin production, signaling a new chapter in healthcare resilience and regional cooperation.
