PTI Restructures Political Committee to Centralise Strategy

Committee Reconstitution

On Friday, PTI announced the formation of a new 23-member political committee, including members from the opposition alliance. The committee will oversee political strategy, organisational matters, and policy direction, acting as the party’s top decision-making body.

The notification was issued by PTI’s Central Secretariat, signed by Secretary General Salman Akram Raja and Additional Secretary General Firdous Shamim Naqvi. It stated that the committee was reconstituted on the instruction of PTI’s founding chairman Imran Khan, in consultation with senior colleagues.

Role and Function

The committee will convene weekly and its decisions will be implemented through the Central Secretariat and party structures nationwide. It will also set policies for PTI’s parliamentary parties in the National Assembly, Senate, provincial assemblies, as well as Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu Kashmir. Sub-committees will be formed with individuals having relevant expertise, including office-bearers of PTI’s wings.

Key Members

The newly reconstituted committee brings together senior PTI leaders and opposition alliance figures. It includes PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan, Secretary General Salman Akram Raja, and Additional Secretary General Firdous Shamim Naqvi, alongside Secretary Information Sheikh Waqas Akram and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi. Opposition leaders such as Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, Mahmood Khan Achakzai, Omar Ayub, Shibli Faraz, Moeenud-Din Riaz Qureshi, and Malik Ahmad Khan Bhachar have also been inducted. Other members include Sajjad Burki representing the overseas chapter, provincial organisers Aliya Hamza, Junaid Akbar, Haleem Adil, and Dawood Kakar, as well as AJK and GB representatives Khalid Khursheed and Sardar Qayyum Niazi. Former NA Speaker Asad Qaiser, Chief Whip Amir Dogar, Senate coordinator Fawzia Arshad, Women’s Wing President Kanwal Shauzab, and Minorities’ Wing President Dr Lal Chand Malhi complete the 23-member lineup.

Background

Last week, Imran Khan dissolved the earlier political committee, citing internal disagreements. PTI insiders said the previous 40-member committee was prone to leaks, undermining decision-making. Asad Qaiser noted that the proposal for dissolution had been under consideration for some time.

Earlier, an internal memo centralising control in the secretary general’s office had drawn criticism, with some party members calling it an attempt to “end democracy and silence dissent.”

According to Dawn News, A PTI leader, speaking anonymously, said the inclusion of opposition alliance members Allama Raja Nasir Abbas and Mahmood Khan Achakzai was necessary to strengthen the committee’s credibility
