Punjab Braces for Ninth Monsoon Spell as Flood Risk Intensifies
LAHORE (Republicpk.com): The ninth spell of monsoon rains is set to begin across Punjab on August 29 and continue through September 2, prompting widespread alerts from provincial authorities.
According to a spokesperson from the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), heavy rainfall is expected in multiple districts including Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Gujranwala, Lahore, Gujrat, and Sialkot. Southern districts such as Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, and Rajanpur are also likely to be affected.
Relief Commissioner Punjab Nabeel Javed has warned of very high flood levels in the Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej rivers, which could lead to severe flooding along riverbanks and low-lying streams. “We are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with all departments to ensure public safety,” he stated.
On the directives of the Chief Minister of Punjab, all district administrations have been placed on high alert. Deputy Commissioners, Commissioners, and relevant officers have been instructed to remain in the field and actively assess conditions.
Alerts have also been issued to the Departments of Health, Irrigation, Construction and Communications, Local Government, and Livestock. Citizens are advised to avoid going near rivers and canals, stay in safe locations, and refrain from unnecessary travel during stormy weather.
In case of emergency, the public is urged to contact the PDMA helpline at 1129 for immediate assistance.
