Punjab Flood Alert, KP Braces for Heavy Rains

The flood situation in Punjab’s three major rivers remains critical, with the Flood Forecasting Division reporting dangerously high water levels. In the Chenab River at Chiniot, the flow has exceeded 554,000 cusecs, creating a high flood situation. The Ravi River is also under strain, with Baloki recording more than 143,000 cusecs and Sudhanai over 126,000 cusecs, both facing high flood conditions. The Sutlej River at Ganda Singh Wala is experiencing a very high flood after India released additional water yesterday, prompting the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to issue a flood alert and warn that the water flow will remain unusually high.

According to BBC Urdu, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has issued a high alert for September 7–9, following forecasts from the Meteorological Department predicting intermittent rains, windstorms, thunderstorms, and heavy downpours in multiple districts. The PDMA warns of flash flooding in local drains, rain-fed streams, and rivers in upper and central districts including Galiat, Mansehra, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Swat, Dir, Chitral, and others. Mountainous areas face the risk of landslides, while urban centers could see flooding due to poor drainage.

Authorities have instructed district administrations to clean drainage systems, alert local communities and tourists, relocate crops and livestock to safer areas, and ensure the availability of emergency services, medical aid, food, and other essentials. The PDMA has also cautioned that strong winds and thunderstorms could damage vulnerable houses, electricity poles, billboards, and solar panels, urging the public to take all necessary precautions.
