Punjab Underwater: Millions Displaced as Rivers Breach Their Limits
LAHORE (Republicpk.com) The Punjab Disaster Management Authority has released an updated report detailing the scale of devastation caused by ongoing floods across the province. Swollen by relentless monsoon rains, the Ravi, Sutlej, and Chenab rivers have overflowed, affecting thousands of communities and triggering a province-wide emergency response.
According to Relief Commissioner Nabeel Javed, more than 2,300 villages have been impacted, displacing approximately 1.516 million people. Emergency teams have relocated 481,000 individuals to safer areas, while 511 relief camps have been established to provide shelter and basic necessities.
Medical support has also been mobilized, with 351 health camps and 321 veterinary units deployed across flood-hit districts. Authorities report that over 450,000 livestock have been moved to safety, minimizing further agricultural loss.
Water levels remain dangerously high. In the Chenab River, flows have reached 111,000 cusecs at Marala, 170,000 at Khanki, 171,000 at Qadirabad, and 146,000 at Head Trimmo. The Ravi River is surging with 78,000 cusecs at Jasar, 138,000 at Shahdara, and 199,000 at Baloki. Sutlej is witnessing its highest flow at Ganda Singh Wala with 303,000 cusecs, while Head Sulemanki is recording 138,000 cusecs.
Reservoirs are nearing capacity. Mangla Dam is currently 80 percent full, Tarbela has reached 100 percent, and India’s Bhakra Dam is at 84 percent, raising concerns about further downstream pressure.
Tragically, 30 lives have been lost in the floods, with two additional fatalities reported due to lightning strikes in Lahore. The Relief Commissioner assured that compensation for affected citizens and farmers will be provided, and that rehabilitation efforts are underway.
Authorities continue to monitor river flows and weather patterns closely, urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and follow official instructions. Rescue operations are ongoing, and the government has pledged full support to restore normalcy in the affected regions.
