No Lawyers’ Movement Possible Under Field Marshal’s Watch

Islamabad: Journalist Mubashir Ali Zaidi has offered a detailed analysis on the implications of Pakistan’s 27th Constitutional Amendment, suggesting that the environment today is very different from the lawyers’ movement of 2007.

Zaidi recalled that the lawyers’ movement against former President Pervez Musharraf was backed by elements within the ISI, a fact that is no longer a secret. He questioned whether retired judges and PTI could launch a similar campaign against the new amendment, and whether any agency would fund it, with mainstream media and bar associations providing support.

In his view, such conditions do not exist today. He argued that the army remains firmly under the control of the “Field Marshal”, and while a few protest events may occur, retired judges will ultimately sit quietly with their pensions. He added that bar associations are unlikely to participate, mainstream media has grown weaker, and although social media is already loud, it will not make a decisive difference.

Zaidi concluded that the 27th Amendment may face criticism online, but no large‑scale movement is expected.
