Rivers on Edge: Flood Alerts Rise in Ravi and Sutlej as Indus, Jhelum Stay Stable

LAHORE — The flood situation across Pakistan’s major rivers is being closely monitored as water levels fluctuate between normal and high-risk zones. According to a report by BBC, while the Indus and Jhelum rivers remain stable, moderate to very high flood levels have been recorded in parts of Ravi, Sutlej, and Chenab.

In the Indus River, Tarbela Dam is operating within normal parameters, with an inflow of 170,000 cusecs and an outflow of 155,200 cusecs. Similarly, the Kabul River at Nowshera is flowing steadily, with both inflow and outflow at 30,000 cusecs, indicating no immediate threat.

The Jhelum River at Mangla Dam also shows a stable profile, with 52,000 cusecs inflow and 8,000 cusecs outflow.

However, flood alerts have been issued in other regions:

  • Chenab River: A moderate flood is reported in Qayyumabad, while flow remains normal in Trimon and Panjnad.
  • Ravi River: Conditions vary significantly, with moderate flooding in Jasar, high levels in Shahdara, and a very high flood warning in Baloki. The situation in Sudhanai remains normal.
  • Sutlej River: The most critical readings come from Ganda Singhwala, where a very high flood is reported. Head Sulemanki is experiencing high flow with 138,058 cusecs, while Head Islam shows a low flood.

Authorities are urging residents in flood-prone areas to remain alert and follow official advisories. Emergency response teams have been placed on standby in high-risk zones, and dam operations are being adjusted to manage downstream pressure.

As monsoon patterns continue to shift, hydrological updates will be crucial in guiding local preparedness and national response efforts.
