Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has claimed that former accountability advisor Mirza Shahzad Akbar has survived a targeted assassination attempt at his residence in the United Kingdom. Akbar, who served under former Prime Minister Imran Khan, is currently receiving emergency treatment at a hospital.
Details of the Brutal Ambush
According to a PTI spokesperson, unidentified men entered Shahzad Akbar’s home and launched a violent physical assault. The attackers reportedly punched Akbar repeatedly in the face, causing severe injuries before leaving him unconscious. Family members immediately rushed him to the hospital, where he remains under medical care.
Severe Injuries Sustained
In an official statement on X (formerly Twitter), PTI revealed the extent of the damage. The attackers, described as being between 25 and 30 years old, focused their assault on Akbar’s face. Medical reports indicate that he has suffered a broken jaw and a fractured nose. PTI stated that local police have collected all relevant details and an investigation into the incident is currently underway.
A History of Threats
This is not the first time Shahzad Akbar has faced violence in the UK. In November 2023, he claimed to have been the victim of an “acid attack” at his home, an incident later investigated by the Hertfordshire police. Akbar has been residing in the UK since April 2022, following the removal of the PTI government. While he faces several cases in Pakistan, he was able to leave the country after his name was removed from the Exit Control List (ECL) following a High Court decision.
The latest attack raises fresh concerns regarding the safety of Pakistani political figures living in exile.
