Trump Labels Anything Less Than US Control of Greenland “Unacceptable”
- US President demanded control of Greenland on social media platform.
- Trump claims Greenland acquisition would significantly boost NATO strength.
- He also threatened new 25 percent tariffs on Iran trading partner nations.
- 56 percent of US adults oppose his extent of foreign military action.
According to DW, US President Donald Trump issued a forceful statement on Wednesday via social media, declaring that any outcome short of complete American control of Greenland would be “unacceptable.” This highly provocative claim was released mere hours before US Vice President JD Vance was scheduled to host negotiations with officials from Denmark and Greenland. The timing amplified the pressure on the negotiating parties dramatically, potentially undermining diplomatic efforts before they even began.
In his post, Trump claimed that if Greenland were to fall under US jurisdiction, the NATO alliance would become considerably “more powerful and effective.” Shifting focus to economic policy, the President also issued a significant threat aimed at Tehran. He warned that the US would impose a 25 percent tax on imports originating from any country that continues to maintain business operations with Iran.
Experts suggest this aggressive tariff measure could potentially increase the cost of goods for American consumers, further intensifying the already strained US-Iranian relationship. Iran is currently grappling with severe internal economic turmoil, reportedly suffering from an inflation rate that has exceeded 40 percent. This dual approach of territorial assertion and economic coercion defines a particularly assertive foreign policy agenda marked by unilateral demands.
This expansive approach to international affairs is, however, reportedly facing severe resistance within the US. The US Senate was scheduled to introduce a resolution aimed at restricting President Trump from undertaking further military actions against Venezuela. Furthermore, a public survey conducted amid the political turmoil following the reported arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on January 3rd revealed significant public dissatisfaction. Fifty-six percent of adult US citizens surveyed stated that Donald Trump had gone too far regarding military interventions abroad, and a majority of voters expressed overall disapproval of his foreign policy conduct.
