National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard has revealed that approximately 2,000 Afghan citizens currently in the United States may have direct or potential links to terrorist groups. She criticized the slow and ineffective vetting process carried out under the Biden administration during the Operation Allies Welcome program.
Screening Concerns
According to Gabbard, a total of 18,000 Afghan nationals entered the U.S. under the program, but comprehensive screening was not conducted at the time. She noted that authorities are now reviewing each case thoroughly, with all relevant agencies actively engaged in the process.
Security Risks
Preliminary investigations suggest that nearly 2,000 individuals among the arrivals have possible connections to extremist organizations. Gabbard warned that groups such as ISIS continue to plan attacks on U.S. soil and are seeking individuals who can advance their objectives. She stressed that the threat is being taken very seriously.
Broader Challenge
In addition to Afghan arrivals, Gabbard highlighted the rising number of illegal entrants into the U.S. in recent years, describing it as another major challenge to national security.
