Sangakkara Backs Pakistan Tour, Says ‘Friendships Can’t Be Left Behind’
Rawalpindi: Renowned Sri Lankan cricketer and commentator Kumar Sangakkara has expressed unwavering support for playing cricket in Pakistan, despite recent concerns raised by some players over security.
Responding to calls to postpone the tour, Sangakkara said, “There are some friendships that cannot be left behind.” He recalled being part of the Sri Lankan team that was attacked in Lahore in 2009, but praised Pakistani security forces for their swift response.
“Even after that incident, I’ve returned to Pakistan many times and will continue to do so,” Sangakkara added. “Cricket in Pakistan has a different flavor, and the love of the people always brings me back.”
The Sri Lankan team is currently in Rawalpindi for an ODI series against Pakistan, followed by a tri-nation tournament featuring Zimbabwe.
Sources indicate that India had extended an offer to host Sri Lanka in an effort to divert the tour, but the Sri Lankan board declined and chose to honor its commitment to Pakistan.
Sangakkara’s remarks have sparked discussion across cricketing circles, highlighting the importance of sports diplomacy and mutual respect between nations.
