New Era in Defence: Asim Munir Becomes Pakistan’s First CDF
Appointment Approved
ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has signed off on the summary sent by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, confirming the appointment of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir as Pakistan’s first Chief of Defence Forces (CDF). Munir, who currently serves as Chief of Army Staff, will hold the dual role for a five‑year term.
Extension for Air Chief
Alongside this decision, the President approved a two‑year extension for Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu. His extended tenure will begin after the completion of his current five‑year term in March 2026.
Prime Minister’s Recommendation
Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had signed the official summary recommending Munir’s appointment as both Army Chief and CDF. This marks the first time Pakistan has formally created the position of Chief of Defence Forces.
Historic First
Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir now becomes the country’s first CDF, a role designed to strengthen coordination across Pakistan’s defence institutions.
Informal Remarks
During an informal conversation with journalists at Aiwan‑e‑Sadr, coinciding with Kyrgyz President Zhaparov’s visit, Munir remarked:
“Everything is fine and in front of you. Things are moving towards improvement, and Pakistan will now take a higher flight.”
