27th Amendment Approval Expected Today, Judges Could Be Sworn in Tomorrow

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly resumed deliberations on the 27th Constitutional Amendment today, with Speaker Ayaz Sadiq presiding over the session. Lawmakers expressed confidence that the amendment will secure approval before the evening, marking a significant step toward reshaping Pakistan’s judicial framework.

The session opened with Fateha prayers for the victims of the Islamabad Judicial Complex suicide attack, followed by a unanimous condemnation of the tragic incident.

According to parliamentary sources, the government has introduced additional changes to the amendment bill, while the opposition has tabled eleven separate proposals. These revisions are being debated in the House, after which the bill will be forwarded to the Senate for further consideration. The Senate’s schedule has already been adjusted, with its session convened earlier than planned to accommodate the legislative process.

Officials confirmed that the government’s primary objective is the swift establishment of the Federal Constitutional Court (FCC). Once the amendment is signed by the President, the FCC will become a permanent institution within Pakistan’s constitutional framework. The court will be tasked with handling constitutional disputes and matters of fundamental rights, ensuring a dedicated judicial body for such cases.

If the bill passes today, sources suggest that judges of the Federal Constitutional Court could be sworn in as early as tomorrow, effectively bringing the new institution into operation. Under the amendment, the President will appoint FCC judges based on the Prime Minister’s advice, ensuring executive involvement in the process.

The amendment has already cleared the Senate once, and today’s proceedings in the National Assembly are expected to finalize its path toward becoming law. The government remains optimistic that this reform will strengthen constitutional oversight and modernize Pakistan’s judicial system.
