Pakistan Tehreek‑e‑Insaf (PTI) leader Naeem Haider Panjutha has launched a strong attack on the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), accusing it of hypocrisy and selective accountability. Appearing on Talat Hussain’s program and later on Samaa TV, Panjutha questioned the commission’s priorities, asking why genuine electoral malpractice such as “snatching papers, rejecting votes, and looting elections” had not been addressed.
He argued that while PTI leaders face scrutiny, ruling party figures like Federal Minister Awais Leghari in NA‑185 and Maryam Nawaz in Daska openly campaigned without consequence, exposing what he called the ECP’s “double standards.”
ECP’s Notice Against Sohail Afridi
The controversy stems from the ECP’s decision to issue a notice against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi. The commission described Afridi’s remarks at a rally in Havelian, Abbottabad as “irresponsible,” claiming he threatened the district administration, police, and election staff while inciting the public ahead of the NA‑18 Haripur by‑election scheduled for November 23.
According to the ECP, Afridi’s behavior endangered the safety of election officials and voters, making it difficult to ensure peaceful polling. Notices were also issued to Shahnaz Omar Ayub, wife of PTI leader Omar Ayub and candidate for the NA‑18 seat, citing violations of the Elections Act 2017 and the Code of Conduct.
Security Measures Ordered
In response, the ECP directed the Provincial Election Commissioner to coordinate with the Chief Secretary KP and the Inspector General of Police to strengthen security arrangements. A detailed report has been demanded to ensure the by‑election proceeds without disruption.
Afridi’s Rally Remarks
During his speech, Afridi accused state institutions of failing to uphold justice and democratic principles, declaring that Pakistan was at a political crossroads. He predicted a decisive victory for Shahnaz Omar Ayub and dismissed the possibility of real competition. The rally was attended by several PTI leaders, including Omar Ayub, Senator Faisal Javed, MNA Junaid Akbar, MPA Iftikhar Khan Jadun, former MNA Uzma Riaz, and Momina Basit.
Analysis
This episode underscores the growing tension between PTI and the ECP. Panjutha’s criticism reflects a broader narrative within PTI that the commission applies rules unevenly, while the ECP insists its notices are aimed at safeguarding electoral integrity. The clash highlights how by‑elections have become a battleground not only for votes but also for defining the credibility of Pakistan’s democratic institutions.
