PTI Leaders Criticize Remarks, Call for Dialogue and Democracy

Background of the Press Conference

The PTI leadership’s press conference in Islamabad was convened as a direct response to the remarks made by DG ISPR in his earlier briefing. In that press conference, the military spokesperson used language that PTI leaders later described as “inappropriate” and “regrettable,” sparking political controversy.

Barrister Gohar Ali Khan’s Statement

PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said the party would not respond to accusations with hostility, but it was necessary to inform the public about what had happened to them. He noted that despite securing 180 seats, PTI was reduced to 91, and even their “home seat” was taken away. He emphasized that PTI has always stood with the army during times of war, but recent developments have caused disappointment. He expressed regret over the language used in the previous day’s press conference, calling it inappropriate, and warned that some forces seemed intent on creating conflict. He urged humility, space for dialogue, and an end to unnecessary cases.

Salman Akram Raja’s Remarks

Lawyer and PTI leader Salman Akram Raja described Pakistan’s political trajectory as marked by repression and weakening of democracy. He recalled dark chapters in history, including violence in Karachi, and criticized the repeated narrative that democracy does not suit Pakistan. He argued that global systems are shifting, with countries pressured to align with major powers, yet Pakistan has gained little from such alignments. Raja condemned recent actions against PTI, saying they lacked constitutional precedent. He questioned how an officer could replace an independent judiciary and highlighted the treatment of lawyers like Imaan Mazari. He stressed that Pakistan’s progress depends on the people’s voice being heard in parliament, not silenced through coercion.

Asad Qaiser’s Position

Former Speaker Asad Qaiser strongly rejected claims that Imran Khan was a security risk, recalling his three decades of association with Khan and praising his vision and contributions, including the establishment of Shaukat Khanum Hospital. He said Khan gave Pakistan dignity and recognition, and any attempt to erase his name was unacceptable. Qaiser noted widespread anger in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa over recent remarks, demanding they be withdrawn. He emphasized strengthening the army as an institution while ensuring democracy prevails. He highlighted the scale of political victimization, citing 64,000 FIRs and 34,000 arrests against PTI members, and criticized the redistribution of seats to rival parties. He called for the immediate release of Imran Khan and PTI leadership, restoration of judicial independence, and respect for the people’s mandate. He also announced that the opposition alliance would convene a national conference.

Broader Context

The PTI leaders collectively argued that Pakistan’s stability depends on dialogue, democratic governance, and cooperation between institutions and citizens. They warned that continued repression and exclusion of PTI from the political process would deepen divisions and harm national unity.
