UN Expert Warns of Inhumane Treatment of Imran Khan in Prison

UN Warning

On Friday, UN Special Rapporteur on Torture Alice Jill Edwards urged the Pakistani government to take immediate and effective action regarding reports of mistreatment of Imran Khan during his detention. She stressed that his imprisonment must comply fully with international standards and human rights principles.

Background of Complaint

In September, Khan’s legal team approached UN representatives, alleging mistreatment of the former prime minister and his wife in prison. Edwards noted that since Khan’s transfer to Adiala Jail on 26 September 2023, he has reportedly been subjected to excessive solitary confinement spending up to 23 hours a day in his cell with severely limited contact with the outside world.

Solitary Confinement Concerns

The UN official highlighted that Khan’s cell is allegedly under constant camera surveillance. She reminded authorities that prolonged or indefinite solitary confinement is prohibited under international human rights law. Edwards demanded that Khan’s solitary confinement be ended without delay.

Government Position

The Pakistani government has not issued a fresh statement in response to the UN remarks. Officials have previously claimed that Khan enjoys more facilities than ordinary prisoners.

Family Account

Earlier this month, Khan’s sister Uzma Khan met him after nearly a month. She told reporters that while his health was stable, he appeared angry and complained of being subjected to “mental torture.” According to her, Khan said he was kept locked in his room all day, allowed outside only briefly.
