Opposition Alliance Rejects Constitutional Amendments, Announces Black Day

Islamabad: The opposition alliance Tehreek-e-Tahafuz Ain Pakistan has categorically rejected the 26th and 27th constitutional amendments, declaring them unconstitutional and an attack on the basic structure of the constitution.

In a statement issued after its meeting, the alliance said the amendments undermine judicial independence by subordinating the judiciary to the administration and limiting the powers of the Supreme Court. The participants paid tribute to the resignations of Justices Mansoor Ali Shah and Athar Minallah, describing their decision as a stand for constitutional principles.

The alliance vowed to continue democratic resistance against what it termed “unconstitutional amendments” and demanded restoration of the constitution in its original form.

It further announced support for the declaration of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Aman Jirga, adding that a resolution against the 27th amendment will be presented in the KP Assembly.

The Pakistan Constitution Protection Movement also revealed plans for a march from the Punjab Assembly to the Lahore High Court, pledging full participation in the lawyers’ protest in Lahore. Next Friday has been declared a nationwide Black Day.

The statement additionally demanded the immediate release of Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi, PTI leadership, and members of the Baloch Unity Committee. Assembly members were directed to walk from the National Assembly to the Supreme Court on Monday as part of the protest campaign.
