Leaders from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) have gathered in person for the first time since their territories faced a series of attacks from Iran. This high-level meeting took place in the city of Jeddah, marking a significant moment of regional coordination and strategic alignment.
While observers previously suggested the conflict might expose cracks within the bloc, the summit conveyed a robust message of solidarity. In a conversation with Al Jazeera, Zeidon Alkinani, the founding director of the Arab Perspectives Institute, explained that the gathering showed a “strong sense of unity.”
Strategic Differences and Diplomacy
The analyst noted that this display of togetherness contradicts earlier predictions that the GCC would emerge from the current crisis in a weaker or more divided state. Even though member states maintain different “schools of thought” regarding Tehran, they have remained in constant communication throughout the period of tension.
Qatar and Oman have consistently advocated for a “diplomacy first” approach to resolve the friction with their neighbor. These nations emphasize that open channels of communication and negotiation are the most sustainable ways to ensure long-term regional peace.
Conversely, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have shifted their focus toward “potential deterrence” to counter what they perceive as a continuous threat. According to Alkinani, these states are more inclined to consider military and defensive measures to prevent further aggression against their sovereignty.
Infrastructure Under Threat
The regional tensions have escalated as Iran reportedly targeted critical energy infrastructure across all six member states. These nations include Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, all of which play vital roles in global energy markets.
Beyond local energy sites, the attacks have also focused on US-linked interests and various civilian and military installations. The summit in Jeddah serves as a platform to align these varied perspectives into a single, cohesive regional policy that addresses these diverse security threats.
By maintaining a unified front, the GCC aims to demonstrate that internal tactical disagreements do not diminish their collective resolve. The meeting highlights that while the path to security may vary, the ultimate goal of protecting the Gulf remains a shared priority for all member nations.
